Cytotoxicity screening tests use tissue cells in vitro to observe the effects of test chemicals or extracts of medical devices on cell growth, reproduction and morphology.

Cytotoxicity is preferred as an initial pilot test and is an important indicator for toxicity evaluation. It is a simple, fast, highly sensitive test and it substitutes animal testing.

Cytotoxicity test methods are also useful for comparison of different batches of materials, and in exploring the significance of changes in the manufacturing processes.
